Griefing Prevention for Players and Server Owners
Griefing is ruining other players' experience on purpose: destroying builds, flooding with lava, lagging the server with mobs or spawn-killing new players. minecraft.wiki's guide says plugins for land protection, logging and rollback stop most of it; on unmodified servers, backups, game rules and commands do what they can.
What are the common griefing methods and fixes?
| Method | Plugin servers | Unmodified servers |
|---|---|---|
| Destruction | Block and chunk protection; logging and rollback | Back up often; set the tntexplodes game rule to false; waterlogged blocks resist TNT |
| Offensive builds and cages | Logging and rollback | /fill to remove; bans |
| Chat spam | Spam protection plugins | Kick or ban |
| Mob lag | Mob limit plugins | /kill commands; mobGriefing false stops creepers and endermen changing terrain |
| Lava and water floods | Limit who can place liquids | Clear lava buckets by command; backups |
| Spawn killing | Turn PvP off at spawn; several exits | Short resistance and random spread on spawn |
How can players protect themselves?
Build away from spawn, use land claims where the server has them, keep valuables in ender chests and keep a backup base. See protecting valuables and allies and reputation.
How do servers protect new players at spawn?
The griefing guide suggests turning off PvP in the spawn area and giving several exits, since a single exit is easy to camp. Without plugins, it shows commands that give players near spawn brief resistance and spread them out to random spots away from it.
How does this relate to factions servers?
On factions servers, raiding other factions is part of the game, but claims protect land from simple griefing: inside a claim only members can build unless permissions allow others. Server rules decide what counts as griefing versus raiding. See power and claims and server rules.
What counts as griefing on ArtemisPvP?
See the ArtemisPvP rules; claims and shields are on Factions basics.
