Villages: Where to Find Them and How They Work
Villages generate in plains, meadow, savanna, taiga, snowy plains and desert biomes, with a building style for each. They are full of villagers to trade with, beds, job site blocks, a bell and up to two iron golems; 2% generate abandoned, full of zombie villagers.
Where do villages spawn?
Villages generate in plains, meadow, savanna, taiga, snowy plains and desert biomes, with matching building styles; on Bedrock they also appear in snowy taiga and sunflower plains. Desert villages can have camels. Cartographer villagers sell explorer maps to villages, and with cheats /locate structure finds the nearest one.
A village has a 2% chance to generate abandoned: every villager is a zombie villager, doors and torches are missing, and cobwebs and mossy cobblestone replace parts of the buildings.
What makes a village a village?
In Java Edition, a village is defined by claimed beds, bells and job site blocks: any subchunk holding one is a village centre, along with the 26 subchunks around it. On Bedrock, a village exists while at least one villager is linked to a bed, starting as a 65x25x65 area around that bed.
- Beds set the population limit; villagers breed up to the number of valid beds.
- Job site blocks (lectern, grindstone, smithing table and more) give villagers their profession; see villager trading.
- The bell marks the gathering site where villagers meet and wandering traders appear; villagers ring it when a raid starts.
What can happen to a village?
- Raids: a player with Bad Omen entering the village triggers waves of illagers; see raids.
- Zombie sieges (Java only): a 10% chance at midnight, or in thunderstorms, when a village has at least 20 valid beds; zombies spawn however well lit the village is.
- On Normal difficulty, a villager killed by a zombie has a 50% chance to become a zombie villager.
How do you cure a zombie villager?
