Gold, Raid and Guardian Farms Explained
A gold farm kills zombified piglins for gold nuggets and rotten flesh, using Nether portals or spawning platforms in the Nether. A raid farm triggers raids over and over for emeralds and totems of undying. A guardian farm at an ocean monument gives prismarine and lots of experience, up to 180,000 XP an hour for a fully optimised one.
How does a gold farm work?
Gold farms kill zombified piglins, which drop gold nuggets and rotten flesh. They spawn naturally in nether wastes, crimson forests and Nether fortresses, and Nether portal blocks can spawn them too. So there are two kinds of farm: portal farms, simpler to build, and natural-spawning farms on platforms high in the Nether, which work better on Java but are more complex. Because hitting one angers every zombified piglin nearby, farms use that shared anger to lure them into a kill zone.
How does a raid farm work?
- A surface where raiders are forced to spawn; they cannot spawn on leaves or scaffolding (on Java also not on slabs, glass or liquids), which lets builders control where they appear.
- A killing area to finish them off, or to kill them yourself for experience.
- Ominous bottles from raid captains to keep starting raids.
Raid farms are mainly built for emeralds and totems of undying, plus saddles, crossbows, iron axes and witch drops. Most give so many emeralds that villager trade prices stop mattering. See villager trading.
How does a guardian farm work?
Guardians only spawn in ocean monuments, in water inside the monument's spawning area. Many guardian farms drain the monument so guardians can only spawn where you want them (no-drain designs now exist too), then kill them for prismarine shards, prismarine crystals, fish and a lot of experience: a fully optimised farm makes about 180,000 XP an hour, one of the fastest experience farms. Draining is slow work, and sponges clear most rooms. See ocean monuments.
What does each farm give?
| Farm | Main output | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Gold farm | Gold nuggets, rotten flesh | The Nether |
| Raid farm | Emeralds, totems of undying | Village or pillager outpost |
| Guardian farm | Prismarine, fish, a lot of experience | Ocean monument |
For iron, creepers and general mob farms, see mob farms.
