Minecraft PvP servers: kinds of PvP and how to pick
A PvP server is any server where fighting other players is the main thing to do. The kind of PvP changes everything else: how long a fight lasts, what you lose, and what you are fighting for. ArtemisPvP at play.artemispvp.com is a factions PvP server with duels, Last Man Standing and minigames alongside.
The main kinds
- Factions - team PvP over land, bases and objectives. Fights have consequences: loot, land and rank.
- HCF - hardcore factions with deathbans and short maps. See HCF vs Cosmic-style factions.
- Practice - queue into a fight, practise, queue again. No long-term progress.
- KitPvP - spawn with a kit and fight in an arena.
- Minigames - round-based games with PvP in them, such as Sky Wars and Bed Wars.
What decides how combat feels
- Version. Many PvP servers are balanced for 1.8.9 combat, which has no attack cooldown. Newer versions changed how swinging works. More on the 1.8.9 PvP server page.
- Clicking rules. Each server decides which clicking methods are allowed. On ArtemisPvP: butterfly, jitter and drag clicking are allowed. ArtemisPvP does not publish a CPS limit.
- Gear. Vanilla gear makes fights about aim and movement; custom enchants add abilities that trigger in a fight.
- Stakes. Losing a practice duel costs nothing. Losing at a factions outpost can cost your gear and a death ban.

Getting better at PvP
Most improvement comes from fighting a lot and watching how you lose. Duels are the low-stakes place to practise on ArtemisPvP. General advice on practising PvP is in the 1.8.9 PvP FAQ, and the enchant pages tell you exactly when an opponent's enchant will trigger, so you know what you are up against.
