Best Minecraft servers: how the rankings really work

Search for the best Minecraft servers and you get lists, not answers. Each list ranks servers by something it can count, and none of those counts is how much you will enjoy a server. This guide explains what the rankings measure, then how to judge a server yourself. It is written by ArtemisPvP, a factions server at play.artemispvp.com - so it ranks nobody, ourselves included.

What a ranking counts

  • Votes. Most server lists order servers by votes. Servers reward players for voting, so a high rank often means a good reward, not a good server.
  • Players online. Big networks top these lists. A big number tells you a server is busy, not that its mode suits you.
  • Sponsored places. Many lists sell the top slots. They are usually labelled, but easy to miss.
  • Reviews and likes. Useful when there are many of them, easy to fill when there are few.

How individual lists rank servers is covered on the server list FAQ.

Best for what

A server can only be best at the thing it does. A minigame network can be excellent and still be the wrong place if you want a long factions season. Before comparing anything, decide what you want from a typical evening: building, short games, a team to grind with, or fights that matter. The servers to join guide walks through the modes.

Judging a server yourself

  1. Does it publish what it runs? A wiki or guide with real numbers beats a banner.
  2. Is it alive at your hours? Log in when you would normally play.
  3. Can everything be earned in game? See free to join for what to ask.
  4. Are the rules clear and applied to everyone? Read the rules and look at the Discord.
  5. Does it fit your version and edition? Some servers are Java only; some are balanced for 1.8.9.

For factions in particular, the full checklist is on how to choose a factions server.

Questions

How can you tell if a server is active before you commit?

Join at the hours you normally play, look for a published event schedule, and read the Discord. On ArtemisPvP the schedule is on the wiki: an envoy every 30 minutes, KOTH every 6 hours.
