TNT Minecarts
A minecart with TNT explodes like TNT (power 4) but can go off instantly, and the faster it is moving, the bigger the blast: with enough speed its power is a random value between 4 and 11.5. That makes it a powerful weapon in PvP and a tool for players who build rail-based TNT machines.
What sets off a TNT minecart?
- Passing over a powered activator rail: it explodes after 4 seconds (80 game ticks), like a TNT block.
- Being destroyed by fire, lava or an explosion: a random delay of 0 to 1.95 seconds.
- Hitting the ground after falling more than three blocks, unless it lands on rail.
- In Java, being pressed into a block or entity while moving.
- In Java, two TNT minecarts on a powered rail give an instant explosion.
Bedrock differs: minecraft.wiki notes they only explode there when they land on the ground or turn very fast.
How strong is the explosion?
The base power is 4, the same as TNT, plus a random bonus up to 1.5 times its speed, capped at 7.5. So at a speed of 5 or more, the power is random between 4 and 11.5. Set off by an activator rail in Java, it does not destroy its own rail or the block under it. Explosion rules: explosion mechanics.
How are TNT minecarts used in PvP?
