Sand Stacking and How Slabs Stop It
Sand stacking means firing sand so it lands and piles up into a column, usually to fill the water around a base so TNT can break it. Defenders stop it with slabs and other part-height blocks: sand that cannot settle as a block breaks into an item instead.
What is sand stacking?
minecraft.wiki's cannon guide explains that falling blocks fired downwards together can form a tower as tall as their speed in blocks per tick, rounded up. Those towers are usually used to remove water. The CosmicPE wiki explains why that matters for raids: TNT that explodes inside a block such as sand gets through water-protected walls, while TNT that explodes in water does nothing.
Community guides use the same word. The CosmicPE community wiki's base-building guide tells builders to place slabs at Y:0 to prevent sand stacking, and its cannoning page mentions sand gen buckets as a help for sand stacking on that server.
Why do slabs stop it?
A falling block only turns back into a block if the centre of its bottom lands in an empty space and the block below can hold it. If it lands somewhere it cannot become a block, it breaks and drops as an item. Our reading of that rule: a slab changes where the sand comes to rest, so the sand breaks instead of building the column. The CosmicPE guide's advice to slab the gaps at Y:0 fits this.
The rule behind this is on falling blocks.
How do defenders lay this out?
- CosmicPE's guide: wraps (layers of blocks around the base) with a watered one-block gap between them.
- Slabs placed at Y:0 in those gaps to prevent sand stacking.
- Check the server's own rules: some limit how many walls or which defences you may build.
General wall design is on armor and shielding.
How do raiders deal with slabs?
By breaking the slabs first so the next sand can land, or by firing at layers that are not slabbed. Many fights come down to intel: knowing which layer is slabbed and which is not before choosing a cannon.
Does sand behave the same on every server?
No. The CosmicPE wiki notes that on that server sand falls normally only at low heights and above Y16 teleports to the ground. Factions servers often change physics with plugins, so test in that server's own cannon area or creative server if it has one.
Frequently asked questions
What is sand stacking in Minecraft factions?
Firing falling sand so it lands and piles up, usually to fill water gaps in a base wall so TNT can break through.
Why do slabs stop sand?
Sand that cannot settle into a full block space breaks into an item instead of landing as a block.
