PvP Utility Items: Webs, Lava, Water, Blocks
Utility items are your backup weapons. Cobwebs trap and slow, lava burns and forces a reaction, water escapes webs and slows the opponent, sponges remove their water, and blocks stop a chaser's sprint. The PvP guide's advice: carry just a few and get very fast with them.
How are cobwebs used?
- Defensive: slow a chaser so you can heal or sort your inventory.
- Offensive: web an opponent and strafe-crit them, or shoot harming arrows into them.
- Hit web: hit a close opponent and place a web behind them, in the path of their knockback, so they hang in the air.
- Head web: knock them against a wall and web their head block; surround it so water cannot clear it.
- Anti-combo: cobwebs stop knockback, so a web under yourself ends a combo.
Webs are easy to escape with a pearl or water, so plan the follow-up.
How is lava used?
- Double-click lava under the opponent: they ignite and you pick the lava back up.
- Standoff breaking: strafe and lava a player staring at you behind a shield; they must lower it to put the fire out.
- Fire pit: leave the lava down to hold them in place and deal more damage.
- Burning: fighting while on fire messes up the knockback you take, so combos on you get harder.
- Counter lava: make them waste time dousing while you escape a web or heal.
How is water used?
Douse yourself when burning, wash away a cobweb, or pour water on the opponent to slow them as they wade. If they are stuck in it, crit them, since, as the guide puts it, they cannot escape crits and take no knockback from knockback hits in water. Draining: when they try to escape a web with water, scoop it up with an empty bucket or spam lava on the web. Sponges soak up their water entirely.
How are blocks used?
Place blocks to walk over enemy webs and water, break their water source blocks, or put a block about 4 blocks in front of a chaser so they hit it, lose their sprint and give you a free hit.
What else counts as utility?
Ender pearls (ender pearls in PvP), tipped arrows of Slowness, Weakness, Poison, Harming II and Slow Falling, and splash poison, which damages through armour and messes up movement; honey bottles cure poison without removing your good effects. See PvP status effects and PvP kit types.
