PvP Playstyles: Defensive vs Aggressive

A defensive player keeps a little distance, baits mistakes and wins slowly by draining armour and resources. An aggressive player never lets up, stays close and tries to drop the opponent before they can heal. Each beats certain players, and switching between them mid-fight is a skill of its own.

How do you play defensively?

  • Open trades with knockback hits and back away when they rush or jump.
  • Use your shield to stop damage and get out of dangerous moments.
  • Autohit and shield-sacrifice for free hits, then back off.
  • Try to land the first hit of every exchange so you can retreat a hit ahead.
  • Repair armour safely; drain play fails if you waste durability.

The Java guide calls this the most common SMP style and says it works well against players with good aim but weak strategy.

How do you beat a defensive player?

Stay calm and do not make reckless pushes they can dodge. Go all-in when their shield breaks, since being close with no shield is the worst spot for a defensive player. Pearl-chase them when they are low.

How do you play aggressively?

  • Stay close; use no-KB crits, p-crits and jump resets to keep knockback low.
  • Use the shield mainly to avoid being knocked away.
  • Follow every shield break with crit chains; click the shield only once so you stay close.
  • Keep a health lead so you can push whenever they need to heal.

It relies on mechanics and speed to make the opponent panic.

How do you beat an aggressive player?

Play defensively and punish their riskiest moves. Disable their shield, because without it they are easy to deflect and combo. Pearl out when you will not be punished, not just when you are low. Surprise them with backstabs and sidesweeps, since they keep pushing into you.

When should you switch styles?

When the opponent starts predicting you. The guide's example: play defensively with crit deflections and they will try no-KB crits; then turn aggressive with double crits and backstabs. When both players are very low, the guide suggests offhanding a totem and rushing. Techniques used here: crit techniques, shield techniques, ender pearls. Practise in practice PvP.
