Jump Resetting and Hit Selecting
Jump resetting means jumping at the moment you are hit, so you take less sideways knockback. Hit selecting means landing your own sprint hit right as the opponent hits you, which cuts the knockback you take and can flip the combo. Both are the standard ways to escape or avoid a combo.
What is a jump reset?
minecraft.wiki's PvP glossary defines it as jumping as you are hit to take less horizontal knockback. The Java guide lists it as the main counter to sprint-hit combos, and the Bedrock guide adds that you should not jump reset on the very first hit, only on the ones after.
What is hit selecting?
Hit selecting is answering the opponent's hit with your own sprint hit straight away. The Java glossary says that cutting your own horizontal speed this way reduces how far you are pushed; the guide explains that hitting while you take knockback massively reduces the rest of that knockback. The Bedrock guide describes it as attacking right after the opponent attacks so you touch the ground first and can start a combo.
A thrown projectile can do the same job on Bedrock: if it hits while the opponent is in melee range, you can attack straight after it lands.
What other knockback-reducing tricks are there?
- Diagonal jump reset (Bedrock guide): press two movement keys toward the opponent while jump resetting for a stronger recovery and a better angle.
- Trade strafing (Bedrock guide): alternate A and D during close hit trades to take less effective knockback than a player moving in a straight line.
- Trade p-crit (Java guide): jump reset and hit select during a sprint-hit trade to get close enough to punish-crit.
- Cobweb under you: the Java guide notes cobwebs stop knockback, and placing one under yourself while being comboed ends the combo.
How do attackers beat jump resets?
The Java guide names the uppercut, sprint-jumping in and hitting on the way up: the hit timing is irregular and hard to jump-reset against. See strafing and spacing and W-tapping.
Does armour change this?
Netherite armour already gives 40% knockback resistance for a full set, and the Java guide notes hit-selecting stops working well in netherite pot fights. Jump resets still help. See knockback and PvP terms.
Where can I practise this?
In ArtemisPvP duels, with the vanilla kit or your own gear.
