Java vs Bedrock Combat Differences
Java and Bedrock look the same but fight differently. Java (1.9+) has the attack cooldown and sword sweeps; Bedrock has neither, so it plays as spam-click combat. Bedrock lets crits and sprint hits happen together, knocks airborne players up again, lets eggs and snowballs push players, and uses different Sharpness and Strength formulas.
What are the main differences?
| Mechanic | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Attack cooldown | Yes since 1.9; damage scales with charge | No |
| Sword sweep | Yes (1.9+) | No |
| Crit + sprint hit | Not together (sprint hit wins) | Can happen in one attack |
| Crit bonus timing | Before enchantment damage | After enchantment damage |
| Airborne knockback | Only pushed away, not further up | Same as on the ground |
| Eggs and snowballs | Knock back mobs | Also knock back players |
| Sharpness | +1, then +0.5 per level (3 at V) | floor(1.25 x level) |
| Strength | +3 damage per level | Multiplies damage by 1.3 per level |
| Explosion push | Measured to the entity's feet, aimed at eyes | Measured from hitbox edge, aimed at head |
How do fights feel different?
minecraft.wiki's Bedrock PvP guide describes Bedrock competitive PvP as spam-click combat, with aim and steady click speed as the two core skills, and notes many Bedrock servers change knockback and turn crits off. Java 1.9+ fights revolve around timing the cooldown, shields and axes. Java 1.8 is in between: no cooldown like Bedrock, but Java knockback and sword blocking. Details: Bedrock PvP techniques and attack cooldown.
What happens on crossplay servers?
On Java servers that let Bedrock players in through Geyser, the Bedrock guide notes the kits follow Java combat conventions, so Bedrock players fight under Java rules there. See Bedrock game modes.
Which rules apply on ArtemisPvP?
ArtemisPvP is a Java server built around 1.8.9 combat, and Bedrock players can join too. See how to join and Bedrock Edition PvP.
