Fire, Lava and Fire Resistance in PvP
Fire does steady damage and, more importantly in PvP, its damage ticks mess up knockback, which breaks combos. Fire Aspect sets targets alight for 4 seconds per level and Flame for 5 seconds. Lava forces the opponent to deal with it. Fire Resistance cancels all of this, which is why PvP kits carry it.
How long do fire enchantments burn?
minecraft.wiki's PvP guide: each level of Fire Aspect adds 4 seconds of burning, so Fire Aspect II gives 8 seconds, dealing 1 health per second; Flame on a bow burns for 5 seconds. Burning damage does not apply while the target is taking damage from other sources such as melee, arrows or explosions. On Bedrock, Fire Aspect weapons can even light TNT.
Why does fire break combos?
Damage like burning does not push you, but it gives the target damage ticks. The PvP guide notes that while on fire, the knockback you take gets messed up, so an opponent finds you hard to combo. Some players fight while burning on purpose; the guide describes one top player who neglected Fire Resistance for this reason. See knockback and i-frames.
How is lava used?
Double-click lava under the opponent to set them alight and pick it straight back up; leave it down to trap them; or lava a player hiding behind a shield so they must lower it. See utility items.
Why carry Fire Resistance?
It makes you immune to fire and lava damage. The PvP guide calls Strength, Speed and Fire Resistance crucial to keep active; the long Fire Resistance potion lasts 8 minutes. If both players have Fire Resistance, the guide says a lava pool works like a water pool you cannot swim in.
