Ender Pearls in PvP
An ender pearl teleports you where it lands and deals 5 damage. Since Java 1.9 it has a 1-second cooldown. In PvP pearls are for escaping to heal, chasing a fleeing opponent, and pearl flashing: using the landing damage's half-second of i-frames to rush in without being knocked back.
How do ender pearls work?
- Throwing one teleports you to where it lands and deals 5 damage.
- Throwing a pearl before you hit the ground cancels the fall damage you had built up; you only take the pearl's 5.
- Cooldown: 1 second (20 ticks), shown as an overlay on the hotbar slot. It was added in Java 1.9 (snapshot 15w34c), so 1.8 has no pearl cooldown.
How do you pearl out to heal?
The PvP guide's advice: do not throw too close, or they chase you down; do not throw too far, because the pearl takes time to land and they can hit you hard meanwhile. In netherite fights it suggests pearling away at around 4 hearts. Only pearl when you will not be crit while it flies. When your shield is disabled, pearling out is a valid way to skip a bad exchange.
What is pearl flashing?
The 5 landing damage starts your invulnerability frames. During those 0.5 seconds you take no knockback except from explosions. Pearl right next to your opponent and you can attack without being knocked away. In Crystal PvP, the guide notes players pearl straight at their feet to avoid face-placed crystals. More: i-frames.
How do you use pearls to attack?
- Pearl-chase a low opponent so they cannot heal in peace.
- Pearl after a fleeing player the moment their shield breaks.
- Pearl into close range against archers and crit them.
- Pearl combo (Bedrock guide): throw a pearl straight at the opponent to knock them, then follow with melee.
Escaping a cobweb? The guide says to use a pearl rather than water when you have one, because it is instant.
