Combat Tag and Combat Logging
Combat tagging starts a timer when you deal or take PvP damage. Until it runs out, servers block escapes such as teleport commands, and logging out is treated as combat logging: often your player is killed or your items drop. It stops players from quitting a fight they are losing.
What does a combat tag do?
Combat plugins describe the same idea. Simple Combat Log's page: a combat timer starts when a player deals or receives damage, shown on the action bar or a boss bar, and while tagged the server can block elytra use, teleporting, Mending, Riptide and crystal or anchor abuse. Combat Tag's page: block commands and show messages or a different scoreboard while players are hitting each other, for a set time.
What is combat logging?
Combat logging means disconnecting during a fight to avoid dying. minecraft.wiki's PvP guide calls combat logging, along with hacking, unacceptable except on select servers. Plugins handle it in different ways; for example, Simple Combat Log can broadcast a message when someone leaves mid-combat, and other plugins kill the player who logged out.
What starts a combat tag?
- Player-versus-player damage.
- Projectile damage such as arrows and tridents.
- Explosion damage, on plugins that tag it.
- Some plugins also tag on ender pearl landings or inside set combat zones.
Exact triggers and timer lengths are set by each server.
Where else do servers use combat tags?
At events: the CosmicPE wiki says its KOTH winner is combat-tagged when the timer ends, giving enemies a last chance, and the event closes once the winner leaves combat. Some envoy chests there spawn guardian mobs that combat-tag players. See KOTH and envoys.
How do you play around combat tags?
Pearl or run to break line of sight and wait the timer out before teleporting, heal before engaging, and never alt-F4 a lost fight on a server that punishes logging. Escape tools: ender pearls. Server-specific rules: for ArtemisPvP, the rules.
