Cannoning Tools and Mods
Cannon builders mostly use two kinds of tools: schematic tools to save and share designs (Litematica, WorldEdit) and fuse displays that show how long primed TNT has left (TNT Timer, TNT Countdown, which also supports 1.8.9). The game's own F3 debug views help too. Always check a server's rules before using any mod.
Which tools do cannoners use?
Checked on each project's own Modrinth page on 24 October 2026:
| Tool | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Litematica | Client mod | A client-side schematic mod for saving, sharing and showing builds as a ghost overlay; it has Schematica's main features except the printer, which is left to add-on mods |
| WorldEdit | Mod and server plugin | An in-game map editor with selections, schematics, copy and paste and brushes; Java only |
| TNT Timer | Data pack or mod | Shows a timer above primed TNT with the seconds until it explodes |
| TNT Countdown | Client mod | Shows a countdown above primed TNT, with custom labels and colours; versions listed from 1.8.9 to current |
What can you do without mods?
minecraft.wiki's cannon intel page lists two built-in tools: reloading chunks with F3 + A, and F3 + B to show hitboxes, which makes TNT and falling blocks easier to track. The debug screen (F3) also shows your exact position and facing, useful for lining up a shot. The same page warns that X-ray packs, entity tracers and free-cam mods are generally treated as cheating on servers. See cannon intel.
Why do schematics matter?
Cannons are large and precise: one block or repeater out of place breaks the timing. Saving a working design as a schematic lets you rebuild it exactly in a new spot or share it. Communities such as Cannoning Paradise trade schematics; see cannoning communities. The Litematica page notes that printing a schematic automatically needs a separate printer add-on, and the Planet Minecraft schematic pack warns players to check server rules before using its designs.
Are these allowed on servers?
It depends on the server. Litematica and TNT Countdown are client mods, while TNT Timer is a data pack (or mod) that runs in the world; servers decide what is allowed, especially printers. Read the rules first. For ArtemisPvP, see the rules.
What should I learn first?
The physics on how TNT works and the parts on cannon terminology; then copy a proven design in Creative.
