Blocks That Slow TNT: Cobwebs, Powder Snow, Honey

Cobwebs, powder snow and honey all slow down entities. In minecraft.wiki's cannon guides, powder snow has the clearest use: TNT moving out of it has its momentum cancelled, which lets builders stop projectiles exactly over a target. As armour these blocks slow TNT down, but minecraft.wiki notes they are usually destroyed before they help.

How is powder snow used in cannons?

Most entities fall through powder snow and move much slower in it, similar to cobwebs. minecraft.wiki's cannon pages use it in two ways: in stab shots, projectiles and injectors move out of powder snow so their motion is cancelled right above the target; and as momentum cancelling, to change TNT direction mid-air, which the wiki says is precise but only advisable for chunk-phasing cannons. TNT falling through powder snow is also listed as a consistent way to adjust TNT position. See tunnelers and accuracy.

What do cobwebs do to entities?

  • Players move at about 25% speed in a cobweb (50% with Weaving).
  • Mobs affected by gravity fall about 0.078 blocks per second inside one.
  • Item entities lose all horizontal momentum, which is why cobwebs in front of dispensers cancel random item spread.
  • Falling blocks are slowed by cobwebs too, per minecraft.wiki's falling block page.

The cobweb page also says a cobweb can partly stop blast damage. In PvP they trap players; see utility items.

What about honey?

Honey slows entities walking on it and stops jumping, even through thin blocks like carpets or bottom slabs placed on it. Its slime-like stickiness matters more for machines; see slime and honey.

Are these good defences?

minecraft.wiki's cannon armour page lists honey, powder snow and cobwebs as alternatives that can slow TNT, but notes they are often destroyed before they can help. Cobwebs do have a use against mortars: combined with slabs and walls they cost the mortar more delay. See armor and shielding and mortars.

Frequently asked questions

Why do cannons use powder snow?

TNT moving out of powder snow has its momentum cancelled, so it can be stopped precisely, as in stab shots.

Do cobwebs stop TNT?

They slow entities, including falling blocks, but as armour they are usually destroyed before they help.
