Minecraft Seeds: What They Are and How to Find Yours
A seed is the number or word that decides how a Minecraft world generates; the same seed makes the same world on the same version. On Java, type /seed to see it, even with cheats off. On Bedrock, it is on the Edit World screen. Terrain and biomes match between editions, but structures do not.
What is a Minecraft seed?
Every world is built from a seed. The world generator always gives the same result for the same seed, so reusing a seed rebuilds the same terrain. You can type a number or a word; a word is turned into a number. A seed is not a description: typing a biome name does not give you that biome.
How do you find your world seed?
On Java, run /seed; it works in singleplayer even without cheats, and you can also see the seed with Re-create in the Worlds menu. On Bedrock, open the world's Edit World screen; Bedrock also has 27 seed templates with set features near spawn.
Do seeds work across versions and editions?
Not always. When world generation changes, usually when new biomes are added, the same seed builds different terrain, and already-made chunks stay as they were. Between Java and Bedrock, terrain and biomes match on the same seed but structures are placed differently. See biomes and Java vs Bedrock features.
What are some famous seeds?
The Java demo world can be played in full by typing North Carolina as the seed. Title screen panoramas were also made from seeds: Java 1.19's comes from typing thewildupdate, and Java 1.13's from 18w22a. On Java, slime chunks also come from the seed.
