Wool and Carpets in Minecraft: Colors and Uses
Wool comes from sheep (shears give 1-3) or 4 string, and can be dyed any of 16 colors; 2 wool make 3 carpets. Wool blocks sound vibrations, so sculk sensors and wardens cannot hear through it, and carpets are so thin mobs cannot spawn on them, which makes them perfect for dark floors. Llamas wear carpets as decorations.
How do you get wool and carpets?
- Shear sheep (1-3 wool) or kill them (1 wool); see sheep.
- Craft 4 string into 1 white wool.
- Dye wool by crafting it with a dye; 2 wool of one color make 3 carpets.
- Since Wilderness Bound (26.3) there are also wool stairs and slabs.
What is special about wool?
- Vibration blocking: wool stops sculk sensors and wardens detecting vibrations through it; carpets only muffle vibrations made on or by the carpet itself; see sculk blocks.
- No mob spawning on carpet: a carpet floor keeps mobs from spawning without lighting; see mob spawning.
- Wool burns, and shears break it fastest; carpets break at the same speed with any tool.
- Carpets can sit on any block, including fences, and break falling sand and gravel.

What is wool good for in building?
Bright, soft colors for pixel art, beds (3 wool + 3 planks), banners and paintings. For non-flammable color blocks use concrete instead; see concrete.
