Witch Farm in Minecraft: Redstone, Glowstone and Sugar
A witch farm is built around a swamp hut, where witches keep spawning in the dark. Build spawning platforms inside the hut's area, light up or slab everything around it, and funnel the witches into a kill chamber. Witches drop redstone, glowstone dust, sugar, gunpowder, glass bottles, spider eyes and sticks: a ready kit for brewing.
Why build a witch farm?
Witches drop a mix of brewing ingredients, and on Java 1.21 and later redstone is guaranteed. They have 26 health, more than most monsters. A swamp hut is the only place they spawn constantly in one spot. See witches and brewing potions.
How do you build one?
- Find a swamp hut; see swamp huts.
- Build dark spawning platforms inside the hut's spawning area, starting one block below the hut's corner logs.
- Flush witches off the platforms with water into a drop or trench.
- Kill them by hand at a 1 by 1 spot, or on Java with an entity cramming grinder; see entity cramming.
Tips
Stand at an AFK spot so most of the mob cap goes to the hut, and light or slab every surface nearby so other mobs do not spawn; see the mob cap. Bottom slabs are the easiest spawn-proof floor. Witches drink Healing, Fire Resistance, Swiftness and Water Breathing potions while fighting, so hit hard and fast.
Other ways witches appear
Witches also spawn in normal hostile spawning at light level 0, join raids, and appear when lightning strikes a villager. Those are too random to farm well. Raids: raids.
