What Is Minecraft Bedrock Edition?
Bedrock Edition is the multi-platform version of Minecraft, built on the C++ Bedrock codebase. It was released on 20 September 2017 with version 1.2.0 as the continuation of Pocket Edition, and today it is simply called "Minecraft" on consoles and phones.
What does Bedrock Edition mean?
minecraft.wiki describes Bedrock Edition as the multi-platform edition of Minecraft developed by Mojang Studios, Xbox Game Studios and SkyBox Labs. The name comes from the Bedrock codebase, written in C++ so the game could run on platforms that cannot run Java. The same code also powers Minecraft Education, China Edition, Minecraft Legends and Minecraft Dungeons.
Before the Better Together Update, each version had its own subtitle: Pocket Edition (MCPE), Windows 10 Edition, Gear VR Edition, Fire TV Edition. After it they were all renamed to just "Minecraft", and "Bedrock Edition" became the community's name for all of them. Since 7 June 2022 the PC bundle has been sold as Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, and the launcher renamed "Minecraft for Windows" to Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on 10 September 2024.

How do Bedrock version numbers compare to Java?
Bedrock uses its own numbers for the same game drops. On minecraft.wiki: Wilderness Bound is Java 26.3 but Bedrock 26.50 (15 September 2026); Chaos Cubed is Java 26.2 and Bedrock 26.30 (16 June 2026); Tiny Takeover is Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10 (24 March 2026).
