Turtles in Minecraft: Eggs, Scutes and Turtle Shells
Turtles live on beaches and always return to the beach where they were born to lay eggs. Breed two with seagrass, and one goes home to lay 1-4 eggs that hatch on sand after about 4 to 5 nights, almost always at night. Each baby drops a turtle scute when it grows up; 5 scutes make a turtle shell helmet that gives 10 seconds of Water Breathing, and the turtle shell itself brews Potions of the Turtle Master.
How do you breed turtles?
Feed two turtles seagrass. One becomes pregnant, slightly taller, and travels back to its home beach to lay eggs on sand. Eggs hatch faster at night and take several cracks to open. Protect them: zombies, husks, drowned and other mobs trample turtle eggs on purpose. Breeding basics: breeding animals.
How do you get turtle scutes?
A baby turtle drops 1 scute when it grows into an adult. Feeding babies seagrass makes them grow faster. Use a Silk Touch tool to move eggs; the babies will then treat the new spot as home.
What are scutes used for?
- Turtle shell: 5 scutes; a helmet that gives Water Breathing for 10 seconds whenever you are not underwater.
- Potion of the Turtle Master: brewed from a turtle shell (not scutes); Slowness and strong Resistance together; see every potion.
- Repairing turtle shells in an anvil.
