Tricky Trials (1.21)
1.21, Tricky Trials, is the major Java Edition update released on 13 June 2024. It adds trial chambers, the breeze and bogged, the mace, the crafter, new copper and tuff blocks, wind charges and new potions.
What are trial chambers?
Trial chambers are an underground structure made of copper and tuff, common under the deepslate layer. They are built for mid-game combat: trial spawners release waves of mobs, and the challenge rises for each extra player nearby. Beating a spawner gives a trial key, which opens a vault for loot. Players who carry the Trial Omen effect turn spawners ominous, and ominous trial keys open ominous vaults with better rewards.
How does the mace work?
The mace is crafted from a heavy core (a 7.5% reward from ominous vaults) and a breeze rod. It deals 6 damage, with an attack speed of 0.6. Hit something after falling at least 1.5 blocks and you do a smash attack that deals more the further you fell, and cancels your own fall damage.
- Density (I-V): +0.5 damage per block fallen, per level.
- Breach (I-IV): cuts the target's armour effectiveness by 15% per level.
- Wind Burst (I-III): only from ominous vaults; launches you back up after a smash so you can chain them.
What new mobs are in Tricky Trials?
- Breeze: 30 HP, leaps around and fires wind charges; drops breeze rods, and 1 rod crafts 4 wind charges.
- Bogged: a mossy skeleton with 16 HP that shoots poison arrows every 4.5 seconds instead of 3.
New potions came too: Infestation (stone), Oozing (slime block), Weaving (cobweb) and Wind Charging (breeze rod), plus matching tipped arrows.
What blocks did 1.21 add?
- Crafter: crafts items with redstone, one item per pulse.
- Copper bulb, copper door, copper trapdoor, copper grate and chiseled copper.
- Polished tuff, tuff bricks, chiseled tuff and tuff stairs, slabs and walls.
- 20 new paintings, 3 music discs, ominous bottles and the Bolt and Flow armour trims.
