Trails & Tales (1.20)
1.20, Trails & Tales, is the major Java Edition update released on 7 June 2023. It adds archaeology with brushes and pottery sherds, trail ruins, the cherry grove, the camel and sniffer, bamboo wood, armour trims and the netherite upgrade template.
How does archaeology work?
Archaeology uses the new brush, crafted from a stick, a copper ingot and a feather in a vertical line. Brush suspicious sand (in warm ocean ruins, desert temples and desert wells) or suspicious gravel (in cold ocean ruins and trail ruins) to uncover loot. Both blocks fall like sand and gravel but vanish when they land, so dig around them carefully.
Brushing finds pottery sherds (20 kinds), which decorate a decorated pot, plus rare items such as the sniffer egg and the music disc "Relic" by Aaron Cherof (a 1/12 chance in trail ruins).
What mobs came in Trails & Tales?
- Camel: 32 HP, spawns in desert villages, and can carry two players on one saddle.
- Sniffer: the Minecraft Live 2022 mob vote winner and the first "ancient" mob, 2x2 blocks big. It hatches from a sniffer egg and digs up torchflower seeds and pitcher pods.
What blocks were added in 1.20?
- The cherry grove biome with the cherry wood set and pink petals.
- The bamboo wood set: block of bamboo, bamboo planks, bamboo mosaic and the bamboo raft.
- Chiseled bookshelf (holds six books), hanging signs and the calibrated sculk sensor.
- Torchflower and pitcher plant, grown from seeds the sniffer finds.
- Trail ruins, a buried structure in taigas, old growth birch forests and jungles.
What are armour trims and smithing templates?
1.20 added smithing templates: 16 armour trim designs that add a pattern to armour, and the netherite upgrade template now needed to turn diamond gear into netherite. Templates are used up, but a copy can be crafted with 7 diamonds in a U shape around the template. See how to get netherite.
