Toggle Sprint and Sneak in Minecraft
On Java Edition you can make sprint and sneak toggles instead of hold keys: open Options, Controls and switch Sneak and Sprint from Hold to Toggle. Since 1.21.9, Attack/Destroy and Use Item can toggle too, Auto-Jump sits in the same screen (off by default), and a Sprint Window option sets how fast a double-tap of forward must be.
Where are the Java settings?
| Option | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Sneak | Hold or Toggle | Hold |
| Sprint | Hold or Toggle | Hold |
| Attack/Destroy | Hold or Toggle | Hold |
| Use Item/Place Block | Hold or Toggle | Hold |
| Auto-Jump | Jumps up one block when you walk into it | Off |
| Sprint Window | Ticks allowed for a double-tap of forward to sprint | 7 |
All of these are under Options, Controls since Java 1.21.9; earlier versions put the toggles in Accessibility Settings. Key binds: controls.
Why use toggles?
- Less strain on your fingers on long sessions, which is why they began as accessibility options; see accessibility settings.
- Toggle sprint keeps you sprinting without holding Ctrl, handy for travel.
- Toggle sneak helps when building on edges, so you do not fall.
- Toggle attack helps hold a mining click.
Is toggle sprint good for PvP?
Many PvP players use toggle sprint so they never forget to sprint, then W-tap to reset sprint hits. Others prefer hold to stay in control. Try both; see best PvP settings and sprinting and sneaking.
What about Bedrock?
Bedrock has its own controls settings for keyboard, controller and touch, with options that differ by device. Look under Settings, Controls on your platform. Bedrock also has an Auto-Jump option.
