The Void in Minecraft: What Happens If You Fall
The void is the empty space outside the buildable world: below Y=-64 in the Overworld and below Y=0 in the Nether and the End, and above the build limit. Fall far into it and you take damage that armor, Resistance and totems cannot stop. On Java it kills you about 2.5 seconds after damage starts. In the End, falling off an island drops you straight into it.
Where is the void?
| Dimension | Below | Above |
|---|---|---|
| Overworld | Y=-64 | Y=319 |
| Nether | Y=0 | Y=255 (Java), Y=127 (Bedrock) |
| The End | Y=0 | Y=255 |
Bedrock layers stop you falling out of the Overworld and Nether, so the End is where most players meet the void. Above the build limit you just cannot place blocks; it does not hurt.
How much damage does the void do?
On Java, about 4 health every half second once you are 64 blocks below the bottom (Y=-128 in the Overworld, Y=-64 in the Nether and End). That beats armor, Protection, Resistance and totems of undying; see totems. On Bedrock it starts at Y=-81 or Y=-17, and an invisible floor at Y=-105 or Y=-41 stops you falling further.
What happens to items in the void?
Items and mobs that fall in are removed. Your inventory is lost when you die there unless keep inventory is on; see keep inventory.
How do you stay out of the void?
- In the End, bridge carefully and keep ender pearls or a water bucket ready; see the ender dragon.
- Elytra and fireworks can save you if you fall off an island; see elytra.
- Endermen and the dragon can knock you off, so wear Feather Falling and avoid edges.
Is there still void fog?
Java once had black void fog and particles near bedrock, added in Beta 1.8 and removed in 2014 to help performance. Bedrock's void floor is a different, later feature.
Frequently asked questions
Can a totem save you in the void?
No: void damage ignores armor, Resistance and totems of undying.
