The Garden Awakens (1.21.4)
1.21.4, The Garden Awakens, is the Java Edition game drop released on 3 December 2024. It adds the pale garden biome with pale oak wood, the creaking mob, the creaking heart and resin.
What is the pale garden?
The pale garden is a variant of the dark forest with grey pale oak trees instead of dark oak. It is covered in pale moss blocks and carpets, pale hanging moss, and eyeblossoms, flowers that open and close with the time of day. No animals spawn there naturally. Pale oak trees grow from saplings in a 2x2 square and come with a full wood set and boats.
How do you beat the creaking?
The creaking spawns at night in the pale garden from a creaking heart block hidden inside a pale oak trunk. Its melee hits deal 3 HP, and it follows players up to 32 blocks from its heart.
A creaking stops moving while a player in Survival or Adventure looks at it (unless the player wears a carved pumpkin), and it shrugs off ordinary damage, only swaying when hit. Each hit shows a particle trail back to its heart.
The heart is the real target. It only activates between two pale oak logs facing the same way. Break it and its creaking is removed, with no loot or experience. Attacking the creaking also makes resin grow around the heart.
What is resin used for?
- Resin clumps drop from a broken creaking heart and appear around it when its creaking is attacked.
- Resin clumps craft a block of resin; a block of resin plus two pale oak logs crafts a creaking heart.
- Smelted resin becomes resin brick, used for resin bricks (with stairs, slabs, walls and a chiseled block) and as an armour trim material.
What does the pale garden look like?
Its grass is a washed-out grey, the sky is smoky grey and the water is a pale light blue. Naturally grown pale oaks carry pale hanging moss, sit on pale moss patches and can hide creaking hearts; pale oaks you grow yourself have none of these decorations.
The Garden Awakens was the final Java Edition version released in 2024.
