Swamp Biome in Minecraft: Where It Is and What's There
A swamp is a flat, wet biome of shallow water, vine-covered oak trees and lily pads. It is the only biome with swamp huts, which hold a witch and a black cat. Slimes, frogs and bogged spawn here.
Where does the swamp generate?
Swamps form on flat land near sea level with very high erosion and cool to moderate temperatures. They often border plains, taigas and forests, with windswept hills nearby, and turn into mangrove swamps where it is warmer. Rivers do not flow through them.
What is in a swamp?
- Oak trees with vines, on land or in shallow water
- Lily pads, firefly bushes and more mushrooms than most biomes
- Clay on the floor of shallow water, gravel deeper down
- Fossils underground
Mobs and structures
Slimes spawn here between Y=51 and Y=69 at light level 7 or less, more on some moon phases. Frogs, bogged and witches live here. Swamp huts and abandoned camps can generate, and villages next to swamps get swamp villagers.
How do you find one?
The fastest way to find one in a world with cheats is /locate biome minecraft:swamp, which works on Java and Bedrock (Bedrock uses its own IDs for some biomes, so let tab-complete fill it in). The F3 screen on Java shows the biome you stand in. The search covers a large area but can miss very narrow strips of a biome.
How biomes are placed
Overworld biomes are placed by a few hidden noise values: temperature, humidity, continentalness (how far inland), erosion (how flat) and weirdness. That is why the same neighbours keep showing up together, and why a biome you want is usually found next to its usual partners. Tip
Catch a frog here or in a mangrove swamp: frog type depends on the biome it grows up in, and a frog that eats a small magma cube drops a froglight.
