Survival Mode in Minecraft: What It Is and How to Win
Survival is Minecraft's default game mode: you gather resources, craft tools, eat, and fight mobs with limited health and hunger. The optional goal is to beat the ender dragon in the End, which gives a dragon egg, a big burst of experience, the End Poem and gateways to the outer End islands. The game keeps going after that.
How does Survival work?
- You have health (10 hearts) and hunger; see health and damage.
- Blocks take time to break, and the right tool is faster.
- Most recipes need a crafting table; the recipe book shows what you can make.
- Your inventory has 4 rows of 9, including the hotbar.
- On Bedrock, Survival worlds without cheats earn achievements.
What is the usual path through Survival?
Punch a tree, make wooden then stone tools, build a shelter before the first night, find iron, then diamonds. Build a Nether portal, collect blaze rods and ender pearls, find a stronghold with eyes of ender, and fight the dragon. Step by step: the beginner's guide and the ender dragon.
How does difficulty change Survival?
Peaceful removes hostile mobs and refills hunger; Easy, Normal and Hard make mobs hit harder and starvation more dangerous. Hardcore is Survival on Hard with one life; see Hardcore mode.
What is survival multiplayer (SMP)?
Survival on a server with other players, usually friends cooperating or competing. Many big servers add their own rules, economies and game modes on top. See how to join a server.
