Superflat Worlds in Minecraft: Presets and Codes
A superflat world (Flat world on Bedrock) replaces normal terrain with flat layers. The default is one layer of bedrock, two of dirt and one of grass in a plains biome, so the ground is at Y=-60. On Java villages and strongholds can generate; on Bedrock no structures do. Mobs spawn normally and slimes are very common.
How do you make a superflat world?
Java: on the World tab choose World Type: Superflat, then press Customize to pick a preset or edit the layers and biome. Bedrock: turn on Flat world in the Advanced settings and choose a preset; Bedrock presets only change the layers and biome. Structures still need Generate Structures turned on. All types: world types.
What superflat presets are there?
| Preset | What it is |
|---|---|
| Classic Flat | 1 grass, 2 dirt, 1 bedrock, plains; villages only (unlike the default, no strongholds) |
| Tunnelers' Dream | 1 grass, 5 dirt, 230 stone, 1 bedrock in windswept hills, with strongholds, mineshafts and monster rooms |
| Water World | 90 layers of water over gravel, dirt and stone in a deep ocean, with ocean monuments, ruins and shipwrecks |
| Overworld | Plains features, villages, outposts, strongholds, mineshafts and ruined portals |
| Snowy Kingdom | Snow over grass in snowy plains, with villages and igloos |
| Bottomless Pit | Cobblestone instead of bedrock, so the void can be reached in Survival |
| Desert | 8 sand over 52 sandstone, with villages, desert pyramids, strongholds and mineshafts |
| Redstone Ready | 116 layers of sandstone over 3 stone and bedrock, no structures, for building circuits |
| The Void | Just one layer of air: an empty world (The Void biome on Java, plains on Bedrock) |
How do superflat preset codes work?
On Java a preset code is the block layers from the bottom up, separated by commas, then a semicolon and the biome. A number and an asterisk repeat a layer. This example puts one mossy cobblestone layer at Y=-64, 250 layers of air, then obsidian and snow on top:
minecraft:mossy_cobblestone,250*minecraft:air,minecraft:obsidian,minecraft:snow;minecraft:plains
Codes cannot describe structure settings, so copy them only for layers and biome.
How do you make a superflat server?
In server.properties set level-type to minecraft:flat before the world is first created. The generator-settings line takes the layers and biome as JSON, for example the Classic Flat layout:
{"biome":"minecraft:plains","layers":[{"block":"minecraft:bedrock","height":1},{"block":"minecraft:dirt","height":2},{"block":"minecraft:grass_block","height":1}]}
Why are there so many slimes in superflat?
Slimes spawn in slime chunks deep underground, and a default superflat world is low enough that the whole surface counts; see slime chunks. Light does not stop them, so build on a layer of slabs or glass, or choose a preset with deeper ground.
