Sulfur Cubes in Minecraft: The Block-Swallowing Mob
Sulfur cubes are passive, bouncing mobs found only in sulfur caves, added in Java 26.2. A large sulfur cube can swallow a full block, which stops it moving and changes how it reacts to hits: it gets knocked back instead of hurt. Large cubes split into two small ones when they die, and you can pick up a large one with a bucket.
Where do sulfur cubes spawn?
Only in sulfur caves, at any light level. Small cubes appear when a large one dies and grow up after 20 minutes; slimeballs or a golden dandelion speed that up. Biome: sulfur caves.
What happens when it absorbs a block?
A large sulfur cube can take in a full-size block. With a block inside it stops moving, takes knockback instead of damage from most attacks, and behaves according to the block it holds; with TNT inside it can even explode. Shears or a lead work on it once it holds a block. Its drops include whatever block it absorbed.
Can you catch sulfur cubes?
Yes: use an empty bucket on a large one to get a bucket of sulfur cube, which keeps its absorbed block. Small cubes cannot be bucketed and cannot absorb blocks, but they follow you if you hold slimeballs. Similar mobs: slimes.
Other sulfur cube facts
- Large cubes have 8 health and drop 1-2 experience; small ones drop nothing.

- They do not take magma block damage while holding a block.
- The update that added them: Chaos Cubed.
