Sulfur Caves and Sulfur Cubes in Minecraft (26.2)
Sulfur caves are a cave biome added in Chaos Cubed (Java 26.2) made of yellow sulfur and red cinnabar, with acid-green pools whose potent sulfur gives off a gas that causes Nausea. They are home to the sulfur cube, a passive bouncing mob that can swallow a block, changing how it moves and bounces, and can be picked up in a bucket.
Where are sulfur caves?
At the same depth as lush and dripstone caves, but smaller and more broken up. They never form right under river valleys or high mountains, and are common under flat land near swamps and deserts. A sulfur spring on the surface means a cave below. Ores are rare inside because sulfur and cinnabar replace most stone. Other cave biomes: lush caves and dripstone caves.
What is a sulfur cube?
- A passive mob that jumps around, found only in sulfur caves at any light level. Cave spiders spawn there too.
- A large cube can absorb a full block: drop one near it or feed it one. Shears, killing it or feeding it another block gets the block back.
- With a block inside it takes knockback instead of most damage and bounces like a ball when hit; the block changes how it bounces.
- A cube holding TNT can be lit and explodes after 6 seconds.
- When a large cube dies it splits into 2 small ones, which grow up in 20 minutes; slimeballs speed that up and a golden dandelion stops it.
- Use an empty bucket on a large cube to carry it.
Is a sulfur pool dangerous?
Yes: the potent sulfur at the bottom of the pools makes a noxious gas with white bubbles that gives Nausea. Do not build a base on top of one. See status effects.
Is there special loot?
A chest minecart from a mineshaft that generates in sulfur caves can hold the music disc Bounce. See music discs and Chaos Cubed (26.2).
