Stone Types in Minecraft: Granite, Deepslate, Tuff and More
Most of the Overworld is stone, with blobs of granite, diorite and andesite mixed in. Below Y=8 stone fades into deepslate, which takes twice as long to mine, and tuff appears below Y=0. Calcite lines amethyst geodes, and the Nether has blackstone and basalt. Mining stone gives cobblestone unless you use Silk Touch.

Why is deepslate harder to mine?
Deepslate takes twice as long as stone to break, so an Efficiency pickaxe helps a lot down at diamond level. Ores below Y=0 are deepslate ores and drop the same items. Silverfish can hide in deepslate as infested blocks. See ore Y levels.
What can you make from stone?
- Cobblestone: stone tools, furnaces, stairs, slabs and walls; smelt it back into stone.
- Stone: stone bricks (4 stone), smooth stone (smelt stone), stone pressure plates and buttons.
- Deepslate has bricks, tiles and polished forms; tuff has bricks, chiseled and polished forms.
- A stonecutter makes stairs and slabs one block at a time; see workstations.
Is stone renewable?
Yes: a cobblestone generator makes endless cobblestone where lava meets flowing water, and smooth stone, stone and stone bricks come from smelting and crafting it. See cobblestone generators.
