Stairs in Minecraft: Recipe and Placement
Stairs are half-step blocks you walk up without jumping. Craft 4 stairs from 6 blocks in a staircase shape, or use a stonecutter to get 1 stair per stone block. Stairs face away from you when placed and can be placed upside down. Walking up them costs no hunger, unlike jumping, and they bend into corners when placed next to each other.
How do you make stairs?
Six blocks of one type in a staircase shape make 4 stairs; the recipe works mirrored too. For stone types, the stonecutter is cheaper: each block gives 1 stair. Wooden, bamboo and wool-type stairs need a crafting table. Workstations: workstations.
How do you place stairs?
- Point at the surface where you want them; the full side faces away from you.
- Place on the top half of a block side or the underside of a block for upside-down stairs.
- Next to other stairs they form inner and outer corners on their own.
- Stairs can be waterlogged.
Why use stairs instead of blocks?
Walking up stairs is faster than jumping and costs no hunger, while each jump costs a little exhaustion. Mobs also walk up them, so careful with base entrances. Hunger: food and hunger.
Building tips
Upside-down stairs make great roof eaves, arches and furniture such as chairs and sofas. Their full faces block light while the step lets some through. For flat half-blocks, use slabs.
Which blocks have stairs?
Every wood type and most stone-like blocks, such as cobblestone, stone bricks, bricks, sandstone, quartz, prismarine, purpur and cut copper, have their own stairs, so you can match the stairs to any build. Stone stairs are tougher against explosions than wooden ones.
Frequently asked questions
