Splash and Lingering Potions: How They Work
Add gunpowder to any potion to make a splash potion you can throw; add dragon's breath to a splash potion to make a lingering potion that leaves a cloud. A splash potion has full effect on a direct hit and less the farther away you are, down to nothing at 4 blocks. A lingering cloud starts with a 3-block radius and shrinks away over 30 seconds.
How do you brew splash and lingering potions?
- Splash potion: put any finished potion in a brewing stand and add gunpowder.
- Lingering potion: add dragon's breath to a splash potion.
See brewing potions for the base potions.
How does a splash potion work?
Throw it with use; thrown at the best angle it travels about 8 blocks, and the bottle breaks. A direct hit gives the full effect. Otherwise, for Healing and Harming the strength drops evenly from 100% at the centre to 0% at 4 blocks; for other effects the strength stays the same but the duration shrinks over the same distance. Distance is measured to the nearest part of your hitbox, not its centre.
How does a lingering potion work?
A lingering potion leaves a cloud about a second after it lands. The cloud starts with a 3-block radius and shrinks to nothing over 30 seconds, and each time it applies its effect it shrinks a bit more. Effects with a duration last a quarter as long as the potion's; Healing and Harming are half as strong, but can hit again and again while you stand in it.
Why are splash potions used in PvP?
Pot PvP is built around throwing splash potions of Healing at yourself, and some Mace PvP kits carry splash potions of Strength and Speed. See PvP kit types and status effects.
