How to Set Your Spawn Point
Sleep in a bed (or use it in the day) to set your spawn point in the Overworld; use a charged respawn anchor in the Nether. With cheats, /spawnpoint sets it anywhere. If your spawn is blocked when you die, you go back to world spawn.
How do you set your spawn point?
| Method | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | Overworld | Sleeping, or using it in the daytime, sets spawn; several players can share one bed |
| Respawn anchor | Nether | Charge it with glowstone blocks (up to 4 charges); each respawn uses a charge |
| /spawnpoint | Anywhere | Needs cheats or operator; /setworldspawn moves the world spawn |
What if your spawn point is blocked?
If your personal spawn is obstructed when you die, you respawn at the world spawn. Beds and respawn anchors are lenient: you can respawn on blocks near them if the exact spot is blocked. A spawn set with /spawnpoint or /setworldspawn needs a two-block-tall space free of solid blocks.
Where is world spawn?
The world spawn is where players first appear. The game picks it with a search that avoids oceans and rivers where it can, and places new players on a random solid block in an area around it: 21x21 blocks by default on Java, 10x10 on Bedrock.
How does a respawn anchor work?
Craft it from crying obsidian and glowstone; it starts with no charge. Use glowstone blocks (not dust) on it to add charges, up to 4. It only sets your spawn in the Nether: in the Overworld or the End it explodes when used, which PvP players use as a weapon. A comparator reads 3, 7, 11 or 15 for 1 to 4 charges. Beds do the opposite: they explode in the Nether and the End.
