Snowy Taiga Biome in Minecraft: Where It Is and What's There

A snowy taiga, once called cold taiga, is a snow-covered spruce forest with ferns and sweet berry bushes, usually next to snowy plains. Animals spawn in their cold variants, foxes are snow foxes, and wolves use the ashen variant.

Where does the snowy taiga generate?

Snowy taigas generate at very low temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Snowy plains often border them, sometimes across a frozen river, and near mountains they turn into groves. On the coast they meet frozen oceans.

What is in a snowy taiga?

  • Spruce trees, ferns and large ferns
  • Snow layers almost everywhere except under trees
  • Fewer sweet berry bushes than a normal taiga
  • Frozen water that turns to ice

Mobs and structures

Rabbits, snow foxes and ashen wolves spawn here. Igloos and trail ruins can generate, and villages and pillager outposts on Bedrock only. Lush caves are fairly common below.

How do you find one?

The fastest way to find one in a world with cheats is /locate biome minecraft:snowy_taiga, which works on Java and Bedrock (Bedrock uses its own IDs for some biomes, so let tab-complete fill it in). The F3 screen on Java shows the biome you stand in. The search covers a large area but can miss very narrow strips of a biome.

How biomes are placed

Overworld biomes are placed by a few hidden noise values: temperature, humidity, continentalness (how far inland), erosion (how flat) and weirdness. That is why the same neighbours keep showing up together, and why a biome you want is usually found next to its usual partners. Biomes look and work almost the same on Java and Bedrock, with small differences in mobs and structures noted on this page. See all biomes and igloos.

Tip

Snow layers here are free snowballs: dig them with a shovel to stock up for PvP.

Does ArtemisPvP have its own worlds?

Yes: besides spawn, its warps include the /winter, /desert and /plains worlds; see Warps.

Frequently asked questions

Can villages spawn in snowy taigas?

Only on Bedrock; they use taiga houses with snowy roofs.

How do you find a snowy taiga?

Use /locate biome minecraft:snowy_taiga with cheats on. This is the Java ID; Bedrock uses different IDs for some biomes, so let tab-complete fill it in.
