Sniffers and Camels: How to Get and Use Them
Sniffers only hatch from sniffer eggs, which you brush out of suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins; they dig up torchflower and pitcher plant seeds from dirt, grass and moss. Camels spawn in deserts and in every non-abandoned desert village, carry two riders, step up 1.5 blocks and can dash; breed them with cactus.
How do you get a sniffer?
Sniffers never spawn on their own. Brush a sniffer egg out of suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins, place it and wait for a snifflet to hatch; it takes 40 minutes to grow up, twice as long as most babies. Breed two adults with torchflower seeds and they drop another egg, then have a 5-minute cooldown. See archaeology.
What do sniffers dig up?
Adult sniffers sniff around and dig into dirt, grass and moss blocks for ancient seeds: torchflower seeds and pitcher pods. They cannot dig while leashed, in water, being tempted, panicking or riding a boat or minecart. Sniffers have 14 HP. See Trails & Tales (1.20), which added both mobs.
How do you get and ride a camel?
Camels spawn now and then in deserts, and one camel spawns in the middle of every desert village that is not abandoned (it never despawns). Put a saddle on one to ride it; a second player can climb on behind you. Riding high on a standing camel keeps you out of reach of most melee mobs on the ground. See horses for other mounts.
What makes camels special?
- They step up 1.5 blocks, so they walk over fences and walls; horses only step up one block.
- Saddled camels can dash: hold jump to charge the dash bar, which replaces your experience bar.
- They fall 6 blocks safely and take half normal fall damage after that.
- They have 32 HP, eat cactus to heal 2 HP and to breed, but cactus blocks still hurt them.
