Slimes in Minecraft: Where They Spawn and Drops
Slimes are bouncing green cubes that spawn in swamps at night and in slime chunks deep underground, below Y=40. They come in small, medium and large sizes; a large slime splits into 2-4 medium ones, which split into small ones. Only small slimes drop slimeballs, used for sticky pistons, slime blocks and magma cream.
Where do slimes spawn?
| Where | Rules |
|---|---|
| Slime chunks | Below Y=40 in about 1 in 10 chunks, at any light level and weather |
| Swamps and mangrove swamps | Between Y=51 and Y=69 at light 7 or less, most often on a full moon, never on a new moon |
| Trial chambers | From some trial spawners (medium and a semi-large size) |
| The Oozing effect | Two medium slimes appear where an affected mob dies |

How big are slimes?
Large slimes have 16 health and hit hard; medium ones less; small ones barely hurt at all. When a large or medium slime dies it splits into 2-4 smaller slimes. A large slime gives about 19 experience in total with all its pieces, and about 9 slimeballs on average.
What are slimeballs used for?
- Sticky pistons; see pistons.
- Slime blocks (9 slimeballs) for flying machines and bouncy floors; see slime blocks.
- Magma cream (with blaze powder) for Fire Resistance potions.
- Breeding frogs, which follow and eat slimeballs; see frogs.
How do slimes behave?
They hop every 0.5 to 1.5 seconds, look for players or iron golems within 16 blocks, and keep moving even with no players nearby. They can swim and climb ladders. A slime farm over a slime chunk, with lots of flat dark space, gives the most slimeballs; see mob farms.
