Slime Blocks vs Honey Blocks in Minecraft
A slime block (9 slimeballs) bounces you up and cancels fall damage; a honey block (4 honey bottles) slows you down, stops you jumping, cuts fall damage by 80% and lets you slide slowly down its sides. Both stick to the blocks touching them when a piston moves them, but never to each other, which is what makes flying machines possible.
How do slime and honey blocks compare?
| Slime block | Honey block | |
|---|---|---|
| Recipe | 9 slimeballs | 4 honey bottles (2×2 grid) |
| Landing on top | Bounce, no fall damage (sneak to stop bouncing) | 80% less fall damage, no bounce |
| Walking on it | Slower and slightly slippery | Much slower, cannot jump |
| Sides | Normal | You slide down slowly with no fall damage |
| Pushed by a piston | Launches entities forward | Carries entities along without launching them |
| Redstone | Conducts power | Java: does not conduct; Bedrock: conducts |
| Sticks to | Adjacent blocks (not honey) | Adjacent blocks (not slime) |
Where slimeballs and honey come from: slime chunks and bees and honey.
How high does a slime block bounce you?
The bounce depends on how fast you were falling: a 50-block fall bounces about 22 blocks and a 255-block fall about 50, up to a maximum of about 57.6. Each bounce is lower than the last. Chickens, ghasts, bats, phantoms, bees, parrots and vexes do not bounce. A pushed slime block launches entities at 20 blocks a second. See fall damage.
Why are they used in redstone?
When a piston pushes or pulls a slime or honey block, every block touching it moves too, up to the 12-block push limit. Because slime and honey do not stick to each other, builders put them side by side to move two parts separately. Glazed terracotta and obsidian do not stick at all. See flying machines.
What else are they good for?
- Slime: bounce pads, safe landing spots and launchers.
- Honey: parkour walls you slide down, mob slowdown traps and safe drops.
- Both break instantly with anything, even with Mining Fatigue.
- Slime blocks are the brewing ingredient for Potions of Oozing; see every potion.
Does ArtemisPvP have piston-heavy builds?
