Skyblock
Skyblock is a survival challenge that starts you on a tiny floating island with almost nothing: a tree, a chest and the makings of a cobblestone generator. You grow everything else from there.
What is Skyblock in Minecraft?
minecraft.wiki describes Skyblock as a community-made game mode in which you build a world out of an almost empty one, normally starting with an island, a chest and a single tree. The classic start is a small dirt-and-grass island; the chest holds at least what you need for a cobblestone generator (water or ice, and lava) and some seeds for food.
The challenge is to survive on those resources, or, in some versions, to reach other islands that hold what you need to enter the Nether and the End.
Who made Skyblock?
Skyblock was created by Minecraft Forum member Noobcrew and released in 2011. It grew into a whole genre: although Skyblock is unofficial to Mojang, Skyblock maps and add-ons have been released through Realms and the Marketplace Pass, a Skyblock Pack content bundle came out in 2020, and the April Fools' snapshot 20w14∞ had a Skyblock-like dimension.
Skyblock maps are also among the most common genres on the Bedrock Marketplace, and minecraft.wiki lists a Skyblock featured server, Skyblock Horizons by Hive Games, as planned for 2026.
How do you start Skyblock?
- Do not break the dirt under the tree; plant every sapling you get.
- Build the cobblestone generator first: water and lava flowing together make cobblestone you can mine forever.
- Expand the island with cobblestone before doing anything risky.
- Plant the seeds early; food runs out fast.
- Light the island so mobs do not spawn on it.
