Sculk Sensors, Shriekers and Catalysts Explained

Sculk sensors hear vibrations within 8 blocks and give a redstone signal; sneaking while you move makes no vibrations and wool blocks them. Natural sculk shriekers in the deep dark shriek when you trigger them, give Darkness and can summon the warden. Sculk catalysts spread sculk when mobs die nearby. All of them need Silk Touch to drop themselves.

How does a sculk sensor work?

A sculk sensor detects vibrations within an 8-block radius, such as walking, placing or breaking blocks, items landing and elytra gliding, and sends out a redstone signal. Sneaking hides your movement and other low-frequency vibrations (but not, for example, breaking blocks), and wool neither makes them nor lets them pass when placed between a sensor and a source. A calibrated sculk sensor (craftable) detects more often and from farther away, and powering its amethyst side makes it listen only for certain kinds of vibration. See redstone basics.

What does a sculk shrieker do?

A shrieker shrieks when a player steps on top of it, or when a vibration caused by a player sets off a sculk sensor within 8 blocks. Only naturally generated shriekers, found in the deep dark and much more often in ancient cities, give Darkness and can summon the warden; ones you place, or that a catalyst grows, are harmless. See ancient cities and the warden.

What does a sculk catalyst do?

When a mob or player dies near a sculk catalyst, it blooms and turns the mob's experience into spreading sculk, sometimes growing new sensors (9% chance on sculk) or shriekers (1%). A warden drops one catalyst when killed, the only renewable way to get one. See experience.

How do you collect sculk blocks?

Any tool works, but a hoe is fastest. Without Silk Touch a sensor, calibrated sensor, shrieker or catalyst drops 5 experience instead of itself. In ancient cities, be careful: each player has a warning level, and the fourth activation of any natural shriekers by that player (the level drops by one every 10 minutes) summons the warden; breaking blocks makes vibrations even while sneaking.

Does ArtemisPvP have a warden-style boss?

ArtemisPvP has its own bosses you can summon with Boss Eggs; see Boss Eggs.

Frequently asked questions

How do you stop a sculk sensor detecting you?

Sneak while moving (it hides footsteps but not every action), or put wool between you and the sensor.

Do placed sculk shriekers summon the warden?

No. Only naturally generated shriekers can summon the warden.
