How to Take Screenshots in Minecraft (Java and Bedrock)
On Java Edition press F2 (Fn + F2 on many laptops and Macs) to take a screenshot. It is saved as a PNG in the screenshots folder inside .minecraft, named with the date and time, and a clickable chat message opens it. On Bedrock use the screenshot button in the pause menu; pictures go to a gallery in your profile.
Where do Java screenshots go?
| System | Folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | %AppData%\.minecraft\screenshots (open it with Windows + R) |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/screenshots |
| Linux | ~/.minecraft/screenshots |
A quick way in: Options, Resource Packs, Open Pack Folder, then go up one folder. Files are named like 2026-10-24_14.05.33.png. More on the folder: the .minecraft folder.
How do you take a clean screenshot?
Press F1 first to hide the HUD: hearts, hunger, the hotbar and your hand, and in multiplayer the chat and name tags. Press F1 again to bring it back. F3 shows the debug screen instead, handy for showing coordinates; see the F3 screen. To change the key, go to Options, Controls, Key Binds and find Take a screenshot under Miscellaneous; see controls.
How do screenshots work on Bedrock?
- Press the screenshot button in the game menu while in a world, not in menus. The HUD is always hidden.
- You must be signed in with a Microsoft account, so the trial cannot take them.
- The Screenshot gallery in your Profile lets you sort, delete, share, set a world thumbnail or pick up to four images for your profile showcase.
- Files are JPEGs in com.mojang/Screenshots, in a folder named after your Xbox account ID.
Are there other ways?
On Windows press Windows + G for the Xbox Game Bar and use its capture button. On Xbox consoles press the Xbox button and choose capture. Minecraft Education also has a camera item that takes in-game photos into a portfolio.
