Saturation Effect in Minecraft: Causes and Cures
The Saturation status effect instantly refills hunger and saturation on Java: each level gives 1 hunger and 2 saturation points per tick. In normal play it comes from a suspicious stew made with the right flower, lasting only a fraction of a second, and on servers it is often given by command to keep players fed.
What gives Saturation?
| Cause | Notes |
|---|---|
| Suspicious stew | About 0.35 s on Java, 0.30 s on Bedrock |
| /effect | Longer or stronger with cheats |
Every effect in the game: status effects.
What does Saturation do?
Because it works every tick, even one second of it fills your entire hunger bar and saturation. Negative levels from commands drain them instead. See suspicious stew.
How do you remove or counter it?
There is nothing to cure: it only helps. Lobbies and minigames give it so nobody needs food. Most effects show an icon in your inventory and at the top right of the screen, with the time left; the /effect command can give or clear any of them.
More about Saturation
Saturation the effect is different from saturation the food stat: the stat is the hidden value food gives you, which empties before your hunger bar drops, and the effect simply tops it up. Minigame lobbies often apply the effect all the time so players never need to eat.
Status effects come from potions, food, beacons, conduits, mobs and blocks. Each has a level and a timer, and most can be cleared by drinking milk; beacon and conduit effects keep refreshing while you stay in range, so they never run out there.
Tips
The stew is a cheap way to top up food, and the Saturation version is one of the most useful kinds. Related: food and hunger.
