Redstone Repeater in Minecraft: How It Works and Uses

A redstone repeater boosts a signal back to full strength 15, sends it only one way, and adds a delay of 1 to 4 redstone ticks that you set by clicking it. A repeater powered from the side is locked and keeps its state, used for memory circuits.

How do you craft a redstone repeater?

2 redstone torches, 1 redstone dust and 3 stone. Each click adds one tick of delay (0.1 seconds each), cycling from 4 back to 1. It also stops signals going backwards through a line.

What is it used for?

  • Long redstone lines
  • Delays and timers
  • One-way signals and diodes
  • Locking circuits

More: repeaters and comparators.

More about the redstone repeater

A line of repeaters on long delays makes a simple timer. A repeater powered from the side by another repeater or comparator is locked and ignores changes, the base of memory circuits. Because repeaters only send signals forward, they also stop signals leaking back into a circuit.

Where does it fit in redstone?

Redstone parts fall into power sources (levers, buttons, plates, torches, observers), wiring (dust, repeaters, comparators) and mechanisms (pistons, dispensers, droppers, hoppers, lamps and doors). Most circuits combine one of each: something to detect, something to carry the signal, and something to act. Signals move along dust at once, while each torch, repeater or comparator adds a small delay measured in redstone ticks of 0.1 seconds. Start with redstone basics.

Tips

Place a repeater every 15 dust to keep a long line powered. Signal strength: signal strength.
