Redstone Dust in Minecraft: How It Works and Uses
Redstone dust is the wire of Minecraft. Placed on the ground it carries a signal up to 15 blocks, losing 1 strength per block, and it connects to nearby dust and components automatically. It also crafts most redstone parts and lengthens potion durations in brewing.
How do you craft a redstone dust?
Mined from redstone ore. Dust points into blocks and powers them; it climbs up and down single blocks. A repeater restores the signal after 15 blocks.
What is it used for?
- Wiring circuits
- Crafting repeaters, comparators, pistons and lamps
- Extending potions
- Clocks, compasses and target blocks
More: redstone ore.
More about the redstone dust
It is also used in brewing to make potions last longer, and to craft clocks, compasses, observers, pistons, dispensers, droppers, lamps and powered rails. Each redstone ore drops 4-5 dust, more with Fortune.
Where does it fit in redstone?
Redstone parts fall into power sources (levers, buttons, plates, torches, observers), wiring (dust, repeaters, comparators) and mechanisms (pistons, dispensers, droppers, hoppers, lamps and doors). Most circuits combine one of each: something to detect, something to carry the signal, and something to act. Signals move along dust at once, while each torch, repeater or comparator adds a small delay measured in redstone ticks of 0.1 seconds. Start with redstone basics.
Tips
On Java, clicking a single piece of dust switches it between a dot and a cross that points in all four directions; place it carefully so it points where you want. Signal strength: signal strength.
