Piston in Minecraft: How It Works and Uses
A piston pushes blocks when powered: up to 12 blocks in a line, which then stay pushed until it retracts. It cannot move obsidian, bedrock or end portal frames, and on Java it cannot move blocks with inventories like chests either. Pistons make doors, farms and flying machines possible.
How do you craft a piston?
3 planks, 4 cobblestone, 1 iron ingot and 1 redstone dust. When powered it extends one block, pushing the blocks in front; when power stops it retracts, leaving the blocks where they are. Some blocks break when pushed instead, such as torches and flowers.
What is it used for?
- Hidden doors and bridges
- Crop farms that push water or break blocks
- Flying machines with slime and honey blocks
- Moving walls and traps

More about the piston
A 13th pushable block in the line stops a piston from extending at all. Pistons also push mobs and players, so they work as launchers and crushers in minigames. Obsidian and bedrock cannot be moved, and on Java neither can blocks with inventories, which is why vaults of obsidian are piston-proof.
Where does it fit in redstone?
Redstone parts fall into power sources (levers, buttons, plates, torches, observers), wiring (dust, repeaters, comparators) and mechanisms (pistons, dispensers, droppers, hoppers, lamps and doors). Most circuits combine one of each: something to detect, something to carry the signal, and something to act. Signals move along dust at once, while each torch, repeater or comparator adds a small delay measured in redstone ticks of 0.1 seconds. Start with redstone basics.
Tips
A piston that pushes slime or honey blocks drags the blocks stuck to them too, up to the 12-block limit. Signal strength: signal strength.
