Pandas: Personalities, Breeding and Brown Pandas
Pandas are 20 HP neutral mobs that spawn rarely in jungles and more often in bamboo jungles. Each has one of seven personalities, normal, lazy, worried, playful, aggressive, weak or brown, set by two hidden genes. Weak and brown are recessive, so brown pandas are the rarest. They follow you if you hold bamboo and drop bamboo when killed (always 1 on Java, 0-2 on Bedrock).
Where do pandas spawn?
In groups of 1-2 in jungle biomes on grass blocks, and more often in bamboo jungles (much more often on Java). 5% spawn as babies. They never spawn on podzol. See biomes.
What do the panda personalities do?
| Personality | What it does |
|---|---|
| Normal | No special behaviour; the most common |
| Lazy | Lies on its back; the slowest land mob |
| Worried | Avoids players and monsters; hides its face in thunderstorms |
| Playful | Rolls and jumps around, sometimes off cliffs |
| Aggressive | Keeps attacking once hit, and defends other pandas |
| Weak | Recessive; half health, sneezes more often as a baby |
| Brown | Recessive; brown and white fur; the rarest |
How do you breed pandas?
Feed two adults bamboo, with bamboo growing nearby: on Java at least one bamboo plant in a 7x7x3 area, and on Bedrock at least 8 bamboo plants within 5 blocks of each panda. Without it they shake their heads (Java) or just eat. To reliably get a brown panda, both parents should carry the brown gene, although a rare gene mutation can also produce one. See breeding animals.
Why do baby pandas sneeze?
Baby pandas sneeze now and then (weak babies far more often). A sneeze makes adults within 10 blocks jump and has a 1 in 700 chance to drop a slimeball. Most pandas hit back only once when hurt, and never on Peaceful. See slimes for other slimeball sources.
