Nether Wastes in Minecraft: Biome Guide

The Nether wastes are the most common Nether biome, about 36% of the Nether, and the classic red landscape of netherrack, lava seas and glowstone hanging from the ceiling. Most Nether mobs spawn here: ghasts, zombified piglins, magma cubes, striders, piglins and sometimes endermen. Fortresses, bastions and ruined portals all appear in it.

What is in the Nether wastes?

  • Netherrack everywhere, with gravel and soul sand along lava shores.
  • Glowstone clusters on the ceiling; see glowstone.
  • Nether quartz and Nether gold ore, easy to spot in exposed walls; see Nether quartz.
  • Huge lava seas, crossed by striders; see striders.

What mobs spawn there?

Ghasts float over the open areas, zombified piglins wander in groups, magma cubes bounce around, piglins roam, striders walk on lava and endermen appear now and then. Ghasts are the big danger in the open; build with blast-proof blocks. Ghasts: ghasts.

How does it generate?

Unlike other Nether biomes, which form big patches, the wastes often appear as thinner strips between other biomes, such as crimson forests and soul sand valleys. Since the Nether Update (1.16) it shares the Nether with four other biomes; see the Nether.

Survival tips

Bring Fire Resistance, cobblestone to bridge, and gold armor so piglins stay calm. Mark your portal, because the wastes all look alike. Build a quick shelter of cobblestone or Nether bricks when ghasts appear.

Why do portals often lead here?

Because the Nether wastes cover so much of the Nether, many portals built in the Overworld open in them. That makes them the first Nether biome most players see, and a common spot for the first Nether base and gold farm. Portal linking: Nether portals.
