The Nether Roof in Minecraft: How to Get On Top
The Nether roof is the flat, empty area above the Nether's bedrock ceiling. On Java you can build up to 128 blocks above it and it does not hurt you, so players use it for farms and fast highways. Getting there needs a trick, usually an ender pearl thrown through the bedrock. On Bedrock you cannot build there.
How do you get onto the Nether roof?
There is no normal way, since bedrock cannot be broken in Survival. The usual trick is throwing an ender pearl so it lands you through the bedrock layers at the top. The ceiling is a rough layer of bedrock from about Y=123 to Y=127.
How do you get back down?
On Java, build a Nether portal on the roof and use it; portals there link both ways since Java 1.15, so a roof portal gives lasting access. Breaking a hole in the bedrock also works, if you have a way to break it. On Bedrock you are sent back into the normal Nether when you rejoin the world. Portal linking: Nether portals.
What is it like up there?
- A single flat bedrock floor with nothing on it except, on Java, some red and brown mushrooms.
- Mobs do not spawn on bedrock, so it is safe until you place blocks they can spawn on.
- There is no separate biome: it copies the biome below, and the lighting changes with it.
What is the Nether roof used for?
Lots of free flat space with no natural spawns makes it ideal for gold farms, bartering farms and hoglin farms; see gold farms. It is also used for long ice or boat highways, since every block in the Nether is 8 in the Overworld; see the Nether.
Is the Nether roof a bug?
It began as one, but Mojang now leaves it alone, so it works in current Java versions. Some servers block access, so check the rules before pearling up.
