How to Tame and Ride a Nautilus
The nautilus, added to Java in 1.21.11, is an underwater mount. Find one in any ocean between Y 38 and 58, tame it with pufferfish (each has a 1 in 3 chance), put a saddle on it and ride: it swims up to 6.5 blocks a second, dashes about 12 blocks, and while you ride it gives you Breath of the Nautilus, which stops your air running out.
Where do you find a nautilus?
Nautiluses spawn in every ocean in groups of 1-3, between Y 38 and 58. They have 15 HP. They follow any player holding a fish or a bucket of fish within 10 blocks, and hunt pufferfish on their own with a dash attack. They are neutral: hit one and it dashes back at you.
How do you tame a nautilus?
Feed it pufferfish or buckets of pufferfish; each has a 1 in 3 chance to tame it. Once any player interacts with it, it becomes persistent and stops counting toward the mob cap. Put a saddle on it to ride it, and it can also wear nautilus armour. Shears take the saddle or armour off.
How do you ride a nautilus?
- Steer with the normal controls; it speeds up in a straight line to 6.5 blocks a second, but crawls at 0.88 on land.
- Hold jump to charge a dash (the dash bar replaces your experience bar) and launch up to about 12 blocks.
- While riding you get Breath of the Nautilus, which pauses your oxygen bar underwater.
- On Bedrock, you cannot take a nautilus through a Nether portal while riding it.
How do you breed nautiluses?
Feed two tamed, full-health adults any fish or bucket of fish to breed them. A baby takes 20 minutes to grow up, faster if you feed it fish. See breeding animals and Mounts of Mayhem (1.21.11).
